Constructed with a combination of Tibetan and Han Chinese styles, Lama Temple (Yonghegong) represents a Buddhist monastery and the best-preserved lamasery in modern China. Built in 1694, the site initially served as a residence for court eunuchs, but was later converted into both an imperial palace and a monastery for monks of Tibetan Buddhism. Inside you can find many interesting works of art, such as three displayed bronze Buddhas, a white sandalwood statue of Maitreya Buddha, sculptures of Arhats in different sizes and positions, and large frescos decorating the walls. You can also purchase many souvenirs and quality incenses at the temple. One of my best memories in Beijing This Temple is one of the main attractions in Beijing, and this is well deserved. Its architecture is beautiful and the atmosphere is not really touristic but solemnly religious. You can be the judge of that by the pictures I have attached. You are surrounded by the delicate smoke of the incense sticks ... By people praying ... And as usual in China, at least as far as I could see, silence, order, no hustle bustle or pushing here... The site is really special: you have there gardens, statues, more statues, flowers, hall of prayers, the very special atmosphere of the Temples we were looking to visit in China ... So much different than our Western civilization. Beijing, Shanghai and so many other Chinese city are becoming so modern so fast ... I have already written this in my other reviews ... But here, In the Lama Temple you can find at least the Far atmosphere we were actually looking for when we decided to go visit China ... If you like it as we do ... then do not miss the Lama Temple.
