Fort Aguada, Sinquerim

#3 of 87 in Historic Sites in Goa
Ruin · Historic Site
A well-preserved structure constructed in 1612, Fort Aguada sits on the mouth of River Mandovi, placed there to fend of the Dutch and the Marathas. Examine how the entire strategic construction is divided into two sections, with the upper part used as a water station and fort, and the lower as a berth for ships. The lighthouse was used to guide ships safely to their docks, until it was abandoned in 1976. Deep inside, discover the escape passage that enabled retreat during war and other emergencies.
