San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Bermeo

Must see · Geologic Formation · Nature / Park
A small islet on the rocky Basque coast San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is connected to the mainland via a man-made bridge. The island itself hosts a nearly 1,000-year-old hermitage likely connected to the Knights Templar. Five hundred years after its construction, Sir Francis Drake sacked the hermitage. Be ready to climb the bridge’s more than 200 steps, and don’t leave any valuables behind in the car. Check online in advance to find out if the bridge is under repair and if the closer parking lot is open. • One of the most beautiful places in Spain. It is hard to park as it always crowded. To get to the church on the island will take 1,5 hours but it worth visiting. Beautiful view from the restaurant on the entrance (pic below)
  • This place is definitely worth the drive and hike down and up the mountain. We did not luck out with the weather, it was drizzling half the time we were up there however even with the rain the scenery is simply spectacular. I have never seen such a beautiful combination of man-made architecture and nature. If your kids are champs like my 3 and 6 year olds make sure they are willing to walk 1200m down and up the steps and back. Do not take your stroller. You will have some of the most memorable photo opportunities and once the trip is complete you will be glad you did it.
