Spend time wandering around Plaza de Maria Pita and admiring the grand architecture that surrounds it. The city hall is particularly striking. This square owes its name to a local 16th-century heroine, Maria Píta, who played a pivotal role in the city’s defense against the English Armada. You can find her statue in the square. Stop for a drink or bite to eat in one of the many terraced cafes and restaurants. This square is also home to the city’s tourist office, if you need a map or extra advice about any attractions. Presided over by the imposing modernist building of the City Hall, its origins date back to the mid-19th century, when it was decided to build this space in homage to the heroine of the defense of The Coruña in 1589 against the Drake-Norreys expedition, fleet sent by the Queen Elizabeth I of England, an event that ended with the English defeat. In front of the town hall is the statue in bronze homage to the heroine, the 20th century work of Xosé Castiñeiras. In addition, we find several terraces of cafes and restaurants, serving as a framework on occasion for the celebration of events and activities.
