Housing one of the largest collections of fine art in the world, Prado National Museum is perhaps best known for works by El Greco, Goya, and Velasquez. One of the most visited cultural sites in the world, the museum includes an impressive collection of over 7,000 paintings, 1,000 sculptures, 5,000 prints, and 8,000 drawings. Though Goya is unquestionably the most extensively represented artist in this collection, other highlights include works by Titian, Rubens, Bosch, Caravaggio, Durer, and van Dyck. The main building was designed in 1785 and constructed during the reign of Carlos III, as part of a grand renewal plan meant to bestow upon the city a monumental urban space. You could spend days in this museum, meandering the halls of famous art through the ages. I came here for the afternoon to view the works of the Spanish masters. I was in awe of the wonderful pieces I had heard about in art history, and seeing them in person could not compare to reading about them with a photograph. For your own enjoyment, I think it essential to read about the artists and pieces you wish to see before walking through the throngs of other tourists. Or better yet, have a local guide explain the history and significance of the art you see. It really transports you into the moment when you look at something.
One of my favourite museums along with National Gallery. It has a very useful aspect with kids(or even if you don't have kids and want just to be there for an hour or two) You can go there from 6 pm without paying tickets. Its very useful with kids as they usually don't stand more than a couple of hours in a museum
