Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey
A Benedictine abbey perched on the craggy rock face of Montserrat mountain, Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey serves as one of Catalonia's most important spiritual sites. Alongside the basilica and monastery, the grounds also feature a sanctuary famous for hosting the image of the patron saint of Catalonia, Our Lady of Montserrat. Featuring grand Gothic and Renaissance architecture, the basilica is a work of art in itself, but also houses a museum with paintings and sculptures from the likes of Picasso, El Greco, and Dali. If you're comfortable with heights, make the trip by cable car for superb views of the mountain and surrounding area. Enjoyed every minute of our tour to Montserrat Monastery. Due to the time shortage in Barcelona we traded our trip to Dali place for the Monastery. I think, it was a good decision (I mean, we will... more »

Amazing monastery! 😍📿🙏 Views are spectacular! Photos don't even do justice. You have bunch of side trails that you can hike around. You can also take the cable-car for €13, or go to the Art Museum for €8, or just go to the church and listen to the choir sing at 1pm. Souvenir shops are fun, they do liquor tasting for €3 and you also have the mini street market with local food choices. Free samples there! :)) All in all, if you wanna do all things around, I'd suggest a whole day. There's a lot of interesting history behind this place so it's always fun to go back through time and wake your inner Indiana Jones! 😁 Hopefully with the right guide you'll like it as much as I did! :)

Amazing place, high up in the mountains about one hour outside Barcelona. The abbey buildings are beautiful specially the main church and the vistas from up there to the lower valleys are incredibly. There are also a number of paths of different lengths an levels for those interested in doing a bit of hiking. Highly recommended for a visit.
