The commercial capital of the country, Colombo has added modern touches to its colonial-era core, creating an exciting and eclectic coastal city.
Venture out of the city with trips to See Lanka Travels (in Waikkal) and Negombo Beach (in Negombo). Spend the 15th (Fri) spotting exotic species with a safari tour. And it doesn't end there: take in the spiritual surroundings of Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple, explore the galleries of Ganeshism Studio Gallery, get engrossed in the history at Colombo National Museum, and stop by Urban Island.

Unawatuna

Palm-fringed beaches with golden sand, turquoise water, and a colorful coral reef are enough to draw any beachgoer to Unawatuna, but there's plenty to do off the beach here as well.
Get out of town with these interesting Unawatuna side-trips: Bentota Beach (in Bentota), Hikkaduwa Beach (in Hikkaduwa) and Nandana Tea Factory (in Akuressa). And it doesn't end there: contemplate the long history of Galle Fort, don't miss a visit to Japanese Peace Pagoda, stop by Made In Ceylon, and identify plant and animal life at Wildlife Areas.

Kandy

Sigiriya

The historic rock of the same name dominates the landscape of World Heritage-listed Sigiriya, where the steep and striking lava plug contains the ruins of an ancient empire.
Explore Sigiriya's surroundings by going to Dambulla Cave Temple (in Habarana), Polonnaruwa (Sandakada Pahana & Polonnaruwa) and Dambulla (Golden Temple of Dambulla & Balloon Rides). There's still lots to do: explore the ancient world of Sigiriya Fortress, don't miss a visit to Pidurangala Rock, and view the masterpieces at Pethikada.
